Prema Zaveštatelnom svitku, čuvanom do Drugog svetskog rata u manastiru, osnovao ga je 1520. žički iguman Teofil sa monasima Ilarionom i Visarionom na mestu male crkve Sv. Nikole, zvane Remetska. Današnja crkva je izgrađena 1778. trudom vršačkog episkopa Vićentija Popovića. Fasade su istaknute naizmeničnim ređanjem opeke i kamena. Zidanu oltarsku pregradu oslikao je 1794. Grigorije Davidović Opšić, koji je autor i zidnog slikarstva.

Stefana Štiljanovića od sredine XVI veka, mesto na kome su se čuvale njegove mošti do 1942, važan kulturni centar na početku XIX veka za vreme arhimandrita Lukijana Mušickog, Šišatovac je kao i drugi fruškogorski manastiri doživeo sudbinu razaranja za vreme Drugog svetskog rata. Sistematska obnova kompleksa započela je 1970.
